Public Canceled March 6 King Lear Performance; March 7 Matinee Will Take Place

The Public Theater's current production of King Lear canceled its March 6 performance because the actor Logan Marshall-Green, who plays Edmund, was sick, and the show does not currently have understudies.

The March 7 matinee will take place, with Joaquín Torres — who normally plays the two roles of the Duke of Burgundy and Curan — switching over to the role of Edmund. Ryan McCarthy, who is in the ensemble, will play Torres' roles.

Shows at the Public typically do not have understudies. King Lear was already planning to add understudies for the recently-announced extension week ending March 25, to comply with the Actors' Equity rules that apply to the Public, which state that a show must have understudies once it goes into its seventh week.

The production, starring Kevin Kline and directed by James Lapine, has its official press opening March 7 but had its opening night celebration after a special 6 PM show on March 4.

Kline, an Oscar winner and two-time Tony winner, is joined in the cast by Brian Avers (Edgar), Larry Bryggman (Gloucester), Kristen Bush (Cordelia), Michael Cerveris (Kent), Philip Goodwin (Fool), Piter Marek (King of France), Laura Odeh (Regan), Daniel Pearce (Cornwall), Michael Rudko (Albany), Logan Marshall-Green (Edmund), Ryan McCarthy (Ensemble), Angela Pierce (Goneril), Tim Stickney (Oswald), Joaquín Torres (Duke of Burgundy), Paris Rose Yates (Young Goneril), Nicole Bocchi (Young Regan) and Talicia Martins (Young Cordelia).

Stephen Sondheim and Michael Starobin provide music for the production. The creative team also includes Heidi Ettinger (scenic design), Jess Goldstein (costume design), David Lander (lighting design) and Dan Moses Schreier and Philip Peglow (sound design).
