"Hairspray" Stays Atop Billboard's Top Soundtracks and Other Charts
By Ernio Hernandez
The soundtrack for the movie musical "Hairspray" maintained its top spot on the Billboard Top Soundtracks and Top Digital Albums charts; it also ranks high on others. Elsewhere on Billboard, the "Hairspray" soundtrack slid back to No. 4 on "The Billboard 200" chart after a jump last week into the No. 2 spot. (It debuted on that chart at No. 20.) "Hairspray" also holds No. 2 on Top Internet Albums. Over on the Top Cast Albums chart, the original Broadway cast recording of the musical remains at No. 4 this week. * The "Hairspray" CD features 17 songs from the film, including three original numbers — "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." The new songs were also penned by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who received the Tony Award for their Hairspray score. The album also features the song "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" (heard over the end credits, but cut from the film's plot) as sung by all three incarnations of Tracy Turnblad — original film star Rikki Lake, original Broadway star Marissa Jaret Winokur and film star Nikki Blonsky. The soundtrack is produced by Shaiman and features tracks mixed by Ed Cherney and Peter Mokran. The track list follows:
"Good Morning Baltimore" - Nikki Blonsky Adam Shankman directs and choreographs the "Hairspray" film, which stars John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Christopher Walken as Wilbur Turnblad, Queen Latifah as Motormouth Maybelle, Amanda Bynes as Penny Pingleton, Zac Efron as Link Larkin, Brittany Snow as Amber von Tussel, Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma von Tussel, James Marsden as Corny Collins, Elijah Kelly as Seaweed, Allison Janney as Prudy Pingleton and Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad. The film is based on the still-running musical Hairspray, which itself was based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name. The movie musical was adapted by Leslie Dixon from the Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan book and features the score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman with additional songs created for the film.
