Streep, Fantasia, Midler, Streisand and More Among Grammy Nominees

Nominations for the 50th Annual Grammy Awards were announced Dec. 6 at The Music Box @ Fonda in Hollywood, CA. Nominees in the Best Musical Show Album category include A Chorus Line, Company, Grey Gardens, Spring Awakening and West Side Story.

Among those who read the nominees for the annual awards were R&B singer/songwriter Akon, three-time Grammy winner Fergie, 18-time Grammy winner Vince Gill, two-time Grammy-winning group Linkin Park (Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda), actor-comedian George Lopez and country singer Taylor Swift.

Nominees in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category include Michael Bublé ("Call Me Irresponsible"), Bette Midler ("Cool Yule"), Queen Latifah ("Trav'lin' Light"), Barbra Streisand ("Live in Concert 2006") and James Taylor ("James Taylor at Christmas").

The soundtracks for the movie musicals "Hairspray" (New Line Records) and "Dreamgirls" (Music World Music/Sony Urban Music/Columbia/Sony Music Soundtrax) were both nominated in the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media category; others in that field include "Across the Universe," "Love" and "Once."

"Love You I Do" — penned by Henry Krieger and Siedah Garrett — for the "Dreamgirls" film was nominated in the Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media category. Other titles nominated: "Falling Slowly," "Guaranteed," "The Song of the Heart" and "You Know My Name."

Other nominees of interest to theatre fans: Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci (for "The One and Only Shrek") and Jim Dale (for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows") were nominated in the Best Spoken Word Album for Children category; Alan Alda was nominated in the Best Spoken Word Album (Includes Poetry, Audio Books & Story Telling) field for "Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself"; Pajama Game's Harry Connick, Jr. picked up nominations in the Best Instrumental Composition and Best Instrumental Arrangement fields for "Ash Wednesday"; Annie Get Your Gun's Reba McEntire and "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson picked up a nomination for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for "Because of You"; and Color Purple star Fantasia nabbed two nominations: Best R&B Song ("When I See You" on "Fantasia") and Best Contemporary R&B Album ("Fantasia").

The 50th Annual Grammy Awards will be presented at the Staples Center in Los Angeles Feb. 10, 2008. CBS-TV will broadcast the event live.
