Detroit's Hilberry Theatre Will Stage Fantasticks, Midsummer, Good and More in 2009-10

The Hilberry Theatre, the graduate theatre company that offers productions in true rotating rep at Wayne State University in Detroit, will launch its 2009-10 season with a rarity: a non-rep production of a musical, The Fantasticks.

The classic by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones — only the second musical to appear on the Hilberry stage — will play a more traditional "stock"-style run Oct. 2-24 before the rotating repertory season begins Nov. 6 with A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Here's the schedule for the season:

William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the fantasy about love, fairies and the woods, Nov. 6, 2009-Jan. 29, 2010.

Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, a tale of artists and lovers in Russia, Dec. 4, 2009-Feb. 11, 2010.

Carlo Goldoni's The Servant of Two Masters, a commedia dell'arte-influenced comedy about a servant worn ragged by his moonlighting, Jan. 15-March 27, 2010.

C.P. Taylor's Good, about a professor whose book catches the attention of the Nazi party, Feb. 26-May 7, 2010.

George Farquhar's The Beaux Stratagem, about two gentlemen in disguise who travel in search of wealthy maidens to charm and steal from, April 9-May 15, 2010.

This season, the 46-year-old Hilberry (and its undergraduate sister arm, the Bonstelle Theatre) will introduce on-line ticketing, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at www.wsushows.com.

Each production at Wayne State University is designed, staffed, managed and performed by up-and-coming theatre professionals.

WSU theatre alumni include Anita Barone, S. Epatha Merkerson, Thorsten Kaye, Jeffrey Tambor, Max Wright and many more.
