Stage Musical Version of Costner/Houston "Bodyguard" Film in the Works

A stage musical version of the 1992 film "The Bodyguard," which starred Kevin Costner as a former Secret Service agent who takes on the role of bodyguard to a pop singer, played by Whitney Houston, is being planned.

According to a report in London's Daily Mail, producer David Ian – currently represented in the West End by his production of Grease and who co-produced the recent revival of The Sound of Music at the London Palladium – is negotiating for the stage rights with Costner, who co-produced the original film, and Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote it.

The idea is reportedly to include the songs that were featured in the film, including "I Will Always Love You," "Jesus Loves Me," "Queen of the Night," "Trust in Me" and "It's Gonna Be a Lovely Day."

The current schedule is for the musical to open in 2012.
