Toxic Avenger Stars Head to Chatterbox As Show Hits 200 Perfs; Tour to Launch in 2010
By Andrew Gans
Three of the stars of the acclaimed new Off-Broadway musical The Toxic Avenger — Diana DeGarmo, Demond Green and Jonathan Root — will sit down for a chat with host Seth Rudetsky at the Oct. 1 edition of Seth's Broadway Chatterbox. That same evening, The Toxic Avenger, which was named the 2009 Best New Off-Broadway Musical by the Outer Critics Circle, will mark its 200th performance at New World Stages. Producers Jean Cheever and Tom Polum also announced Oct. 1 that they have signed a deal with On the Road, the national theatrical booking agency, to bring the musical to various cities around the country. In a statement Polum said, "Going to The Toxic Avenger is a great escape from everyday life and a chance to just have some fun. We also look forward to sharing the laughter with our neighbors just to the north when Toxie has its Canadian premiere in Toronto at The Music Hall. The opening is scheduled for Halloween night . . . how great is that?!" Fans of the musical can visit TheToxicAvengerMusical.com to request that the show play their city. The new musical, according to press notes, "is both a charming love story and laugh-out-loud musical — complete with an unlikely hero, his beautiful girlfriend (a blind librarian and aspiring novelist), a corrupt New Jersey mayor and the most memorable and unbelievable duet you’ll see on any New York stage!" Based on the 1985 classic cult film from Lloyd Kaufman, The Toxic Avenger features music and lyrics by David Bryan and book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro. John Rando directed a cast that currently includes Diana DeGarmo, Nick Cordero, Demond Green, Jonathan Root and Nancy Opel. New World Stages is located in Manhattan at 340 West 50th Street.
