October 6, 2009

Sixty artists have been nominated for the Henry Hewes Design Awards, which honor designers for their work on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway during the 2008-09 theatre season. The awards will be presented at a luncheon to be held later this fall.

Categories include Scenic Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design and Notable Effects, which encompass "sound, music, video, puppetry and other creative elements." All nominated designs must have originated in productions within the U.S.

The Hewes Awards Committee considered more than 200 productions when making its nominations.

Among the productions that received multiple nominations are Shrek (five), Guys and Dolls (four), 33 Variations (four) and Soho Rep's Blasted (three). Shrek designer Tim Hatley received nominations for scenic design, costumes and notable effects (puppetry).

Originally titled the Maharam Awards and later known as the American Theatre Wing Design Awards, the awards were renamed in 1999 to honor founder Henry Hewes.

The Henry Hewes Design Awards Committee comprised theatre critics Jeffrey Eric Jenkins, chair; Dan Bacalzo; David Barbour; David Cote; Glenda Frank; Mario Fratti; and Joan Ungaro.
