Broadway's 13 Gets Updated Double-Disc Recording

The original Broadway cast album of Jason Robert Brown's short-lived coming-of-age musical 13 will receive a new double-CD release from Ghostlight Records Nov. 24.

Tony Award-winning songwriter Jason Robert Brown and his collaborators, librettists Dan Elish and Robert Horn, revisited the work for a new youth production at Houston's Theatre Under the Stars last summer.

Because 13 was recorded prior to its Broadway opening, the 2008 cast recording didn't accurately reflect what theatregoers experienced on stage at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. With amateur performance rights currently available for licensing from Music Theatre International, it was Brown, Elish and Horn's intent that the latest recording should reflect the updated, licensable version of their musical which is currently being performed across the country.

The Ghostlight Records re-release will include the re-mastered Broadway cast album, with the inclusion of "Being A Geek," which appeared in the Los Angeles premiere of 13, but was cut during Broadway previews. Also included is a newly penned version of the song "Opportunity," which was cut from the Broadway production, but now appears in its new form. Both "Being A Geek" and "Opportunity" are featured in their correct running order on the new album and feature original cast members Graham Phillips and Liz Gillies.

The second disc will feature 11 karaoke tracks of several favorites from 13 (including alternate tracks/keys for changing voices), as well as the songs "Here I Come," also cut during Broadway previews, and the original version of "Opportunity." The final two songs on the disc feature Brown performing the demo tracks of "A Little More Homework" and "Getting Over It."

Press notes for 13 read: "Evan Goldman has it all — he's popular, has the perfect family and lives in the greatest city in the world — New York. That is until his parents get divorced and he's forced to move with his Mom… to Indiana. Uprooted from his old life, he has to make new friends and somehow maneuver his way through the minefield of High School to become part of the 'in-crowd.'"

13 was developed at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and Goodspeed Musicals' Norma Terris Theatre in Connecticut. The musical premiered on Broadway Sept. 16, 2008, and ran through Jan. 4, 2009.
