It's the biggest night of the year in Boston theatre. The 2010 Elliot Norton Awards, recognizing excellence in Boston-area theatre, will be handed out May 17. The national tour of Spring Awakening, the New York City-aimed production of Gatz and Broadway directors Diane Paulus and Kenny Leon are among nominees.

The awards ceremony will be held at 7 PM at the newly restored Paramount Theatre.

Leon (Broadway's Fences) was nominated for his direction of Stick Fly for Huntington Theatre Company. Paulus (Broadway's Hair) was nominated for her direction of the Boston production of The Donkey Show, her disco revision of A Midsummer Night's Dream, at American Repertory Theatre. John Collins, who directed Elevator Repair Service's Gatz at A.R.T., was also nominated. All three were in the Large Theatre category.

Karen MacDonald will receive the 2010 Norton Prize for Sustained Excellence.
