Two Actors and One Piano Add to Mayhem of Murder for Two Musical in Upstate NY
By Kenneth Jones
Murder for Two: A Killer Musical, the new musical comedy for two actors and a piano, gets a developmental launch by Adirondack Theatre Festival July 22-31.
Adam Overett and co-writer Joe Kinosian share a piano and play all the roles.
Expect "murder, mystery, music and mayhem" — plus comedy — in the full production, which has commercial producers attached to its future. This is not being billed as the world premiere, but it's the first fully staged production of the work, after readings.
Murder for Two has book and lyrics by Kellen Blair, and music and book by Joe Kinosian.
Scott Weinstein directs "this fast-paced musical comedy/mystery," according to ATF notes. "Audiences meet a distraught but ditzy widow, a comely ballerina, the town psychiatrist, a grad student aspiring to become a detective, a 12-member boys' choir, a squabbling middle-aged couple and more."
Overett plays Officer Marcus. Kinosian plays all of the suspects.
Performances play ATF's home at the Charles R. Wood Theater, 207 Glen Street in downtown Glens Falls, NY. Opening night is July 23.
The design team includes Kina Park (sets); Jason Kantrowitz (lighting); Lydia Dawson (costumes); and Ken Goodwin (sound). Shannon Sturgis is the stage manager.
ATF producing artistic director, Mark Fleischer, first saw the show as a staged reading in New York City in 2009. Fleischer followed the development of the musical by attending readings at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, NY, and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. The production at ATF will be the first time the show is fully staged with actors not holding scripts and with the addition of sets, lights and sound design.
ATF has a 16-year tradition of developing new works for the theatre. Last summer ATF produced Adam Gwon's Ordinary Days, which has enjoyed a regional and Off-Broadway life.
