Icons, Paying Tribute to Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Tina Turner, Madonna and More, Will Play Snapple Theatre Center
By Andrew Gans
Katy Perry, Tina Turner, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and more come to life in the new Off-Broadway show Icons, which will play Friday and Saturday nights at 10:45 PM at the Snapple Theatre Center.
Featuring "dazzling drag reenactments of these and other legendary performances," the production will "kick off its heels and lip sync for its life" beginning Nov. 25.
“We’re bringing a little debauchery back to Times Square,” said Tom D'Angora, the co-creator and producer of Icons, in a statement. “Drag acts have long been performed at gay bars in New York, but there’s no actual live show for those outside of the gay community. Icons presents an opportunity for tourists visiting New York to experience the pageantry of drag. We want them to be able to leave from their vacation with that ‘you won’t believe what we did in New York…’ story.”
“Icons is the perfect after-Broadway extravaganza,” added D’Angora’s producing (and life) partner, Michael Duling. “For those who aren’t ready to go back to their hotel rooms, they can come to our show and party into the Manhattan night, enjoying the unforgettable moments that turned their favorite singing stars into icons.”
D’Angora and Duling say the show is designed for an "ADD generation." Every 90 seconds, something changes: a new number is launched, a dancer is added, a costume is ripped away. The 70-minute show is split into three acts: the first is all dancing, loud music and crazy energy; the second act switches to comedy with a version of RuPaul’s "Drag Race"; the third act rocks out with Gaga, Beyonce and a medley of today’s hottest lady superstars.
The cast features Dennis Williams and Ricardo Torres with back-up from Alex Ringler (also serving as choreographer), David Bryant, Ryan Obermeier and Ricky Schroeder. Costumes are by Joshuan Aponte with wigs by Jared Janas. The production is directed by D’Angora and Duling.
The Snapple Theater Center is located at 1627 Broadway (at 50th St.). Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster.com or by calling (212) 921-7862. For more information visit www.iconsNYC.com
