Tony Nominee Diane Paulus Tapped to Helm Cirque Du Soleil's Amaluna
By Adam Hetrick
Tony Award-nominated director Diane Paulus, currently represented with the Broadway revival of The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, will helm Cirque du Soleil's latest venture, Amaluna, which will launch this spring in Montreal.
Randy Weiner, Paulus' collaborator on The Donkey Show and also one of the producers of Sleep No More, will serve as dramaturg for the production that will premiere in Montreal April 19 prior to an arrival in Quebec July 25. Additional Canadian and U.S. tour dates will be announced shortly.
Tony-nominated Hair choreographer Karole Armitage will choreograph. Amaluna will also reunite Paulus with her Hair scenic designer Scott Pask, who earned a Tony Award for his sets for The Book of Mormon.
Cirque CEO Guy Laliberté is billed as artistic guide, with Fernand Rainville as director of creation. The creative team also includes Mérédith Caron (costume designer), Bob & Bill (composers), Jacques Boucher (sound designer), Matthieu Larrivée (lighting designer), and acrobatic choreographers Debra Brown, Caitlan Maggs and Rob Bollinger.
Paulus earned a Tony Award nomination for her direction of the 2008 revival of Hair, which earned the Best Revival of a Musical Tony Award. Her new production of Porgy and Bess opened to strong reviews on Broadway Jan. 12. She is the artistic director of The American Repertory Theater, where Porgy and Bess premiered prior to its current Broadway run.
Here's how Amaluna is billed: "Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honours femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next. In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony."
