What About Dick?, With Russell Brand, Eddie Izzard, Jane Leeves, Tracey Ullman, Offered April 26-29 in L.A.
By Michael Gioia
Eric Idle's What About Dick? is given a four-performance engagement April 26-29 at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown L.A. Actor-comedian Russell Brand stars in the title role, an Oxford student pursuing philosophy and gynecology.
Featuring music by Idle's Spamalot collaborator, John Du Prez, What About Dick? is staged as a radio play with actors reading from scripts. The production will be taped for release as a concert film.
The cast also includes Eddie Izzard (Race), Jane Leeves (Cabaret), Sophie Winkleman ("Two and a Half Men"), Tracey Ullman (The Big Love), Jim Piddock (Noises Off), Tim Curry (Spamalot) and comedian Billy Connolly. Du Prez plays piano, and Idle serves as the musical's narrator.
What About Dick?, according to the production's website, is "set between 1910 and eight o’clock [and] tells the story of young Dick (Brand) who is studying philosophy and gynecology at Oxford; his two cousins: Emma, (Leeves) an emotionally retarded English girl; her kleptomaniac sister Helena (Winkleman) and their dipsomaniac Aunt Maggie (Ullman) all live together in Kensington in a large, rambling, Edwardian novel. When the Reverend Whoopsie (Curry) discovers a piano on a beach, a plot is set afoot that can be solved only by a private Dick, the incomprehensible Scottish sleuth Inspector McGuffin (Connolly) who with the aid of Sergeant Ken Russell (Piddock) finally reveals the identity of the Houndsditch Mutilator."
A previous workshop version of What About Dick? was mounted at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre in November 2007 with many of the same cast members; Brand is a new addition. The L.A. engagement features an expanded script as well as new additions to the score.
The Orpheum Theatre is located at 842 South Broadway in Los Angeles, CA. For more information and tickets, visit WhatAboutDick.com.
