PHOTO CALL: The 2012 Drama Desk Award Nominee Luncheon
By Joseph Marzullo
The nominees for the 57th Annual Drama Desk Awards greeted the press and posed for photos at a May 8 luncheon held at Oceana.
In keeping with the Drama Desk's mission, nominators considered shows that opened on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off Off-Broadway during the 2011-12 New York theatre season in the same competitive categories.
The Off-Broadway Maury Yeston musical Death Takes a Holiday and the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim's Follies, which are now both closed, earned 10 nominations apiece, the most for any production of the season. Broadway's new Gershwin musical Nice Work If You Can Get It nabbed eight nominations, while the productions of By the Way, Meet Vera Stark; Leap of Faith; Queen of the Mist; and Richard III all earned six nominations apiece.
The 57th Annual Drama Desk Awards will take place June 3 at 8 PM at The Town Hall in Manhattan.
The Drama Desk was founded in 1949 "to explore key issues in the theater and to bring together critics and writers in an organization to support the ongoing development of theater in New York," according to press notes. The organization began presenting its awards in 1955, and it is the only critics organization to honor achievement in the theatre with competition among Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions in the same categories.
