By Andrew Gans
Two-time Tony winner Bernadette Peters helps Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops kickoff their 2012 season May 9 at 8 PM at Symphony Hall.
Peters, who, along with fellow Tony winner Hugh Jackman, will receive the Isabelle Stevenson Award at the June 10 Tony Awards, is expected to perform "There Is Nothing Like a Dame" and "Some Enchanted Evening" from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific; "Being Alive" from Stephen Sondheim’s Company; and "No One Is Alone" from Sondheim’s Into the Woods, among others.
The May 9 Opening Night concert also features a performance of George Gershwin’s "Love Is Sweeping the Country" set to a montage of photo-historian Joseph Sohm’s winning images. Local artist Maggie Scott, a longtime professor at the Berklee College, will also share her vocal talents, and pianist Michael Chertock will perform Gershwin’s "Rhapsody in Blue."
The 127th Boston Pops season will also include John Williams (June 1 and 2), Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers (May 29 and 30), Patti Austin (June 14-16), a Barbra Streisand Tribute with Ann Hampton Callaway (May 15-16), a concert celebrating the 20th anniversary of Gospel Night with Charles Floyd, Crystal Aikin and Melinda Doolittle (June 9), Maureen McGovern (May 26), and tributes to George Gershwin and Cole Porter (June 5, 6 and 8).
Prior to Follies, Bernadette Peters was last on Broadway in the revival of A Little Night Music. She received a 2003 Tony Award nomination for her performance as Rose in the Sam Mendes-directed revival of Gypsy. Peters won her two Tonys for her performances in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song & Dance and Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun, and she has also starred on Broadway in Mack & Mabel, On the Town, Sunday in the Park with George, The Goodbye Girl and the original production of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods.
