By Adam Hetrick
The recent live films of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera and Love Never Dies make a return to U.S. cinemas May 21 and 23, respectively, for an encore presentation.
Fathom Events is presenting the screenings, billed as The Phantom of the Opera — The Complete Story. The film musicals were broadcast in cinemas across the globe in recent months.
Phantom is screened May 21 at 7:30 PM, followed by Love Never Dies May 23 at 7:30 PM.
The 25th anniversary Royal Albert Hall concert staging of Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera took place last October. The event transformed London's Royal Albert Hall to conjure Maria Björnson's original stage designs, featuring direction by Laurence Connor and choreography and musical staging by Gillian Lynne.
Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess, who originated the roles of Phantom and Christine in Lloyd Webber's Phantom sequel Love Never Dies in London in 2010, star in the film. Karimloo is a veteran of the London Phantom, while Boggess opened the 2006 Las Vegas production.
Love Never Dies, Lloyd Webber's musical sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, premiered in London in 2010. It was overhauled by a new Australian creative team, led by director Simon Phillips (Priscilla Queen of the Desert), and opened to positive notices in Melbourne in 2011. The sequel traces the relationship of the Phantom and soprano Christine from Paris to Coney Island.
Ben Lewis, who appeared in the original Australian casts of Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Spamalot, stars as the Phantom, opposite Anna O'Byrne as soprano Christine Daaé. O'Byrne previously played the role in an Australian tour of The Phantom of the Opera.
