Theatre Royal Bath to Produce Summer Season of Classics New and Old, Including Antony Sher in Hysteria
By Mark Shenton
The Theatre Royal Bath in the spa city in South West England is to produce an in-house summer season of three classic plays, new and old, overseen by visiting guest directors: Sheridan's The School for Scandal, Shakespeare's The Tempest and Terry Johnson's Hysteria, which will be staged by Jamie Lloyd, Adrian Noble and the playwright respectively.
The School for Scandal, which begins performances July 5, prior to an official opening July 10 for a run through July 21, will feature a cast that includes Serena Evans as Lady Sneerwell, Susannah Fielding as Lady Teazle, Nigel Harman as Charles Surface, James Laurenson as Sir Peter Teazle, Ian McNeice as Sir Oliver Surface and Maggie Steed as Mrs. Candour, under the direction of Jamie Lloyd.
According to press materials, the play is a "romp through the lives and loves of the upper classes in 18th century fashionable London society. Sir Peter Teazle has married a young country girl in the hope that she will be too innocent to cause him any bother, but his aims are thwarted when she takes up with the most outrageous set of scandalmongers in town; Lady Sneerwell, Mrs Candour and Sir Benjamin Backbite thrive on making mayhem from malicious tittle-tattle." Director Jamie Lloyd recently directed She Stoops to Conquer at the National and The Duchess of Malfi at the Old Vic.
Terry Johnson's Hysteria, which the author himself directs, begins performances July 26, prior to an official opening Aug. 3, for a run through Aug. 18. The cast will include Antony Sher, Will Keen, Indira Varma and David Horovitch. In the play, set in 1939, "82-year-old Sigmund Freud, who has fled from Nazi-occupied Austria, settles down in a quiet Hampstead suburb where he aims to spend his dying days in peace. But when surrealist painter Salvador Dali unexpectedly turns up in his study, along with a young woman who finds it impossible to keep her clothes on, all hell breaks loose."
The Tempest, which is directed by former RSC artistic director Adrian Noble, begins performances Aug. 23, prior to an official opening Aug. 28, for a run through Sept. 8. The cast includes Tim Pigott-Smith (Prosper), Geoffrey Freshwater, Mark Hadfield, Mark Quartley, Iris Roberts and Philip Voss.
