Carmel Dean's Songs Will Be Sung by Lisa Howard, Alysha Umphress and Michael Winther at Barrington Stage
By Kenneth Jones
Lisa Howard, Alysha Umphress and Michael Winther will sing the work of a respected music director and composer in Carmel's Candy Store: The Sweet Songs of Carmel Dean Aug. 23-25 at Barrington Stage Company's Mr. Finn's Cabaret in Pittsfield, MA.
Expect "a tasty sampling of Dean's work as a composer, with rousing, funny and emotionally evocative lyrics by William Finn, Maya Angelou, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Anna K. Jacobs, Mindi Dickstein and Sarah Underwood."
Dean is best known to Barrington Stage audiences as the vocal arranger of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. She went on to become the associate conductor of the show on Broadway, and following that became musical director of the Green Day Broadway musical American Idiot. She will be the musical director and arranger of the upcoming Broadway musical Hands on a Hardbody. She recently launched a YouTube series called "Project: Song Blog," in which she writes an original song for a Broadway performer and records it (and interviews them) in her Union Square apartment. Her song cycle, A Girl Called Vincent, was produced last year at James Madison University, and she is also writing an original book musical set in an amusement park entitled Action Park.
Mr. Finn's Cabaret is located on the lower level of the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center (formerly Stage 2), 36 Linden Street, Pittsfield.
The show features BSC artists and Broadway regulars Howard (BSC and Broadway's The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), Umphress (BSC's Funked Up Fairy Tales; Broadway's American Idiot) and Winther (BSC's The Mysteries of Harris Burdick; Broadway's 33 Variations and Mamma Mia!).
Mr. Finn's Cabaret is named for Tony Award-winning composer-lyricist William Finn, a BSC artistic associate who is artistic producer of BSC's Musical Theatre Lab.
Performance times are 9:30 PM Thursday and Friday and 10 PM on Saturday.
All tickets to Mr. Finn's Cabaret series are $15 and general admission. Beer, wine and soda are available. To purchase tickets or for more information, call the Barrington Stage Box Office at (413) 236-8888 or visit barringtonstageco.org.
