By Michael Gioia
Roger Rifkin, Christopher Ryan and Lauren Elaine Taylor will star in the Musicals Tonight production of Red, Hot and Blue — the 1930s musical featuring a score by Cole Porter — which will kick off the company's 2012-13 season at the Lion Theatre.
Thomas Sabella-Mills will direct Red, Hot and Blue, about a former manicurist, an ex-con and a square boyfriend, which plays Oct. 2-14. James Stenborg is the production's musical director.
Also in the cast are Tara Lynne Khaler, Jessica George, Ben Gleichauf, Beth Kuhn, Jody Cook, Graham Bailey, Tony Castellanos, Ashley Klanac, Rob Lorey, Megan Meyer, Molly Pope, Jeannie Schubitz and Jacob L. Smith.
The musical, with a book by Russel Crouse and Howard Lindsay, features song titles "It's De-Lovely," "Down in the Depths on the 90th Floor," "How’m I Ridin’?" and "A Little Skipper from Heaven Above." The original Broadway production starred Ethel Merman, Jimmy Durante and Bob Hope.
As previously announced, the five-show season — under the artistic direction of Mel Miller — will continue with Fade Out – Fade In, the spoof of 1930's Hollywood, Oct. 16-28. It has book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and music by Jule Styne.
Also included are George and Ira Gershwin's musical revue Strike Up the Band (March 12-24, 2013); the Stan Daniels musical Same Time, Next Year, based on the Bernard Slade play about a couple who meet for a tryst every 24 years (April 2-14, 2013); and the Jerome Kern-Guy Bolton-P.G. Wodehouse musical Leave It to Jane, which satirizes college life in a midwestern U.S. town (April 16-28, 2013).
The Lion Theatre is located at 410 West 42nd Street. For more information and tickets, call (212) 239-6200 or visit MusicalsTonight.org.
