London's We Will Rock You to Issue Special 10th Anniversary Edition of Original Cast Recording
By Mark Shenton
Ben Elton and Queen's We Will Rock You, which recently celebrated its 10th birthday and has now played over 4,000 performances to over 6.4 million people at the West End's Dominion Theatre, is to release a special 10th anniversary edition of the original cast recording. Scheduled for release Oct. 15 by EMI Records, the new edition has been specially redesigned and repackaged as a two-CD set made up of the original CD plus a bonus disc of 11 previously unavailable tracks including performances by Queen. There will additionally be a new 20-page booklet. In it, it is revealed that it was a chance encounter in August 1996 between Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor with actor Robert de Niro at the Venice Film Festival that launched the production, after de Niro asked the Queen players, "Have you ever thought of making a musical? My daughter loves your music." In addition to the ongoing London run, the show has also since been produced in over 30 cities across the world. A bonus disc of live cuts, remixes and alternative versions features companies from Australia, Spain and Germany. From the Spanish production, "No-One But You" is sung as "Sólo Por Ti." There are also three tracks featuring Brian May and Roger Taylor joining the company to perform "Bohemian Rhapsody" with the London cast at the Party in the Park Royal Jubilee Concert live at Buckingham Palace in 2002, and with the German cast, "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions," recorded for German TV show "Wetten Das" in 2004.
