It's Got To Be Love! Christine Andreas' Album "The Carlyle Set" Is Re-Released
By Kenneth Jones
"The Carlyle Set," the 2003 solo album by two-time Tony Award winner Christine Andreas, which has gone out of print, is being re-released by PS Classics, the label devoted to the heritage of Broadway and American Popular Song. The disc was originally issued on the Fynsworth Alley label.
The album, newly designed and packaged, begins shipping from the label's website, psclassics.com, on Sept. 25; the official street date is Oct. 16.
PS Classics already has Andreas' "Here's to the Ladies" disc in its catalog. PS Classics co-founder Tommy Krasker told Playbill.com, "It's been almost a decade — none of us can remember why we didn't release 'The Carlyle Set' in the first place. We'd just done 'Here's to the Ladies' with Christine, and loved working together. …She even used our 'Here's to the Ladies' engineer Tom Lazarus to mix it. So it really is an album that fits so well on our label, and we're delighted to have it now. I hope we'll be able to release Christine's first album, 'Love Is Good,' as well — it's also out of print. PS Classics co-founder] Philip [Chaffin] and I would love to do a new album with Christine. She's as amazing as ever."
"The Carlyle Set" was based on Andreas' sold-out engagement at New York's Café Carlyle. A fresh approach to Rodgers & Hart's "It's Got To Be Love," which she sang to Tony-nominated applause in the revival of On Your Toes, is heard on the CD, which USA Today named it one of the top 10 albums of 2003.
Andreas starred in the 1976 20th-anniversary revival of My Fair Lady opposite Ian Richardson (from which the Carlyle album's "Show Me" hails) and was Tony-nominated as Best Actress for playing Laurey in the 1979 revival of Oklahoma! (she was the first brunette in the part — the reference to Laurey's "yeller hair" was changed). The actress and cabaret star's other Broadway credits include the recent La Cage aux Folles revival, plus The Scarlet Pimpernel, Angel Street and Words & Music.
"The Carlyle Set" is produced by Martin Silvestri, with music direction and arrangements by Lee Musiker.
