Danny Burstein, Sigourney Weaver, Frances McDormand and More Will Take Part in Flea's American Song Series
By Michael Gioia
The Flea Theater in association with Four Arts Media will present 13 episodes of American Song, a new dramatic series comprising original plays for radio and mobile media. Each episode will have a one-night-only public performance at The Flea in NYC.
The hour-long episodes, according to press notes, "will explore American life decade by decade from the early 20th century to the present. American Song takes its name from the way the narrative of each episode in the series is inspired by a quintessential American song from the decade in which it is set. The songs, freshly interpreted, are performed at the beginning and end of the episodes by some of the best contemporary musical artists of our time."
This series will feature vocalists Rosanne Cash and Catherine Russell along with actors Sigourney Weaver (Hurlyburly), Frances McDormand (Good People), Joan Allen (Impressionism), Linus Roache, Adam Driver (Man and Boy), Danny Burstein (Follies), Rebecca Luker (Mary Poppins), Jay O. Sanders (Pygmalion), Maryanne Plunkett, Peter Gerety (Never Gonna Dance), Linda Powell (On Golden Pond) and Reg E. Cathey (The Green Bird), among others.
The first four performances will take place Oct. 15, Nov. 5, Nov. 26 and Dec. 17 at 7 PM. In 2013, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, WGBH and partner Public Radio International will record and broadcast the American Song series nationally.
American Song is created and developed by Arthur Yorinks in association with senior executive producer Bruce Fagin and Flea artistic director Jim Simpson, who is co-directing the series.
"Each stand-alone play will be modern, edgy, raw and compelling," added creator Yorinks in a statement.
The Flea is located at 41 White Street (between Church and Broadway). Tickets are $100 per episode; rush tickets at the door are $20. For more information and tickets, call (212) 352-3101 or visit TheFlea.org.
