Alan Ayckbourn's Relatively Speaking to Be Revived at West End's Wyndham's with Felicity Kendal
By Mark Shenton
A revival of Alan Ayckbourn's 1967 play Relatively Speaking will transfer to the West End following its current national tour, beginning performances at Wyndham's Theatre May 14, 2013, prior to an official opening May 16, for a run through Aug. 31.
Lindsay Posner directs a cast that comprises Felicity Kendal, Jonathan Coy, Kara Tointon and Max Bennett. It is presented by Theatre Royal Bath Productions.
In the play, "Greg only met Ginny a month ago but has already made up his mind that she's the girl for him. When she tells him that she's going to visit her parents, he decides this is the moment to ask her father for his daughter's hand. Discovering a scribbled address, he follows her to Buckinghamshire where he finds Philip and Sheila enjoying a peaceful Sunday morning breakfast in the garden. The only thing is that they're not Ginny's parents."
Kendal, who became famous for BBC's "The Good Life" and has since appeared onstage extensively, particularly in the plays of Tom Stoppard, including the premieres of The Real Thing, Hapgood and Indian Ink. This will be the first time she has starred in an Ayckbourn play since the West End premiere of The Norman Conquests in 1973.
Coy's television credits include "Rumpole," "Hornblower," "Brideshead Revisited," "Downton Abbey" and "Foyle's War." On stage he has starred in Nicholas Nickleby, Donkey's Years and the 2011 West End production of Much Ado About Nothing with David Tennant.
Tointon was most recently on the West End stage in Pygmalion (alongside Rupert Everett) and Absent Friends. TV credits include "Jonathan Creek," "The Bill," "Harry and Cosh" and "EastEnders."
Bennett's recent theatre credits include Posh and In Basildon (both Royal Court), and Luise Miller (Donmar Warehouse).
