By Adam Hetrick
Four-time Tony Award nominee Kelli O'Hara and Nathan Gunn will ride Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel, which will receive a concert staging in February 2013 with the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall.
Tony Award-winning director John Rando (Urinetown, A Christmas Story) will stage the lushly scored classic about a tempestuous love affair between gruff carnival barker Billy Bigelow, to be played by Gunn (Camelot, Show Boat, Billy Budd), and the young millworker Julie Jordan, to be played by O'Hara (The Light in the Piazza, South Pacific, Nice Work If You Can Get It).
Performances will run Feb. 27-March 2, 2013. Rob Fisher (Encores!, Anything Goes) will conduct the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
The cast will also include Stephanie Blythe (Carmen, The Ring Cycle) as Nettie Fowler and Alexander Gemignani (Sweeney Todd, Road Show) as Enoch Snow.
Complete casting will be announced at a later date.
Carousel has music by Richard Rodgers with a book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It is based on the play Liliom by Ferenc Molnar. The classic features such songs as "If I Loved You," "June Is Bustin' Out All Over," "What's the Use of Wondrin'?," "You'll Never Walk Alone," "Mr. Snow" and "Soliloquy."
