Chess Star Judy Kuhn Raising Funds for New Solo Recording Via Kickstarter
By Andrew Gans
Three-time Tony nominee Judy Kuhn, recently seen in the Public Theater's presentation of the new musical Fun Home, is at work on her latest solo recording.
The acclaimed singing actress is raising funds for the new disc via Kickstarter.com.
In a mass email Kuhn writes, "I am a thrilled to announce the launch of my Kickstarter Campaign to raise the funds to record my next solo album! The music will be drawn from my new solo show, which debuted in New York last March and at London’s Hippodrome in October, and is being presented at the Kennedy Center this December.
"This is an album I have been wanting to make for a long time. It is a deeply personal project that includes songs by writers who have influenced me as an artist such as Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Stephen Sondheim, Tom Waits among many others.
"Together with music director and pianist Dan Lipton, as well as percussionist Damien Bassman and cellist Peter Sachon, we have collaborated in making these songs truly our own with arrangements that offer a fresh take on the traditional jazz trio, with use of African and south American percussion, along with acoustic and electric cello.
"Collectively the songs are a meditation on love and happiness and it is a project I am extremely proud of.
"Over the past decade it has become increasingly difficult for artists to find funding for recording projects. My first album was funded completely by the record label, a model of producing that simply doesn't exist anymore. For this reason, I am asking for your support in helping me realize this exciting project through my Kickstarter Campaign, a forum which enables collective funding from family, friends, colleagues, and fans, with contributions of as little as $5.
"In return, along with my sincerest gratitude, I am excited to offer rewards such as signed copies and downloads of the album, tickets to upcoming performances, visits to the recording studio, teaching workshops, and more."
The fundraising drive, which has a goal of $40,000, continues through Dec. 9. To learn more about the project, click here.
A three-time Tony Award nominee for her work in She Loves Me, Les Miserables and Chess, Judy Kuhn also starred in the concert mounting of Alan Menken and Tim Rice's King David and the Los Angeles premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard. Kuhn received an Obie Award for her work in the Off-Broadway Laura Nyro tribute, Eli's Comin', and played Fosca in the Kennedy Center mounting of Stephen Sondheim's Passion. Her solo recording is titled "Serious Playground - The Songs of Laura Nyro" (Ghostlight Records).
Kuhn has also taught workshops for many years at The Michael Howard Studios and has held master classes at NYU/CAP 21, Rider University, Catholic University as well as many schools and theatres around the country.
She will be seen in the upcoming Off-Broadway revival of Passion.
