Sarah Ruhl's Dear Elizabeth, Starring Jefferson Mays and Mary Beth Fisher, Premieres at Yale Rep Nov. 30
By Adam Hetrick
Tony Award winner Jefferson Mays and Mary Beth Fisher co-star in the world premiere of Tony Award nominee Sarah Ruhl's Dear Elizabeth, a play in letters from Elizabeth Bishop to Robert Lowell and back again, which debuts Nov. 30 at the Yale Repertory Theatre.
Frequent Ruhl collaborator Les Waters (In the Next Room, Eurydice, Three Sisters) stages the two-actor play that officially opens Dec. 6 for a run through Dec. 22. The production marks Ruhl's fifth work to be staged at the New Haven, CT, company.
Dear Elizabeth, according to Yale Rep, chronicles "the remarkable thirty-year friendship between two of the most celebrated and honored American poets of the 20th century: Elizabeth Bishop (Mary Beth Fisher) and Robert Lowell (Jefferson Mays). With postmarks from Maine to Key West, and as far away as London and South America, Dear Elizabeth is a lyrical and moving portrait of two lives that unfold in letters."
The production has scenic design by Adam Rigg, costume design by Maria Hooper, lighting design by Russell Champa, sound design by Bray Poor and projection design by Hannah Wasileski.
Mays is a Tony winner for I Am My Own Wife. He most recently appeared in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder at Hartford Stage. His Broadway credits include Journey's End, Pygmalion, The Best Man and Of Thee I Sing, as well as the Off-Broadway productions of Blood and Gifts, Measure for Measure, Quills and Orestes.
Drama Desk nominee Fisher has appeared in Frank's Home, Boy Gets Girl, The Radical Mystique, By the Sea…, The Night of the Iguana and Extremities. She earned a Jefferson Award for The Year of Magical Thinking.
Ruhl earned a Tony nomination for In the Next Room and is the author of the plays Dead Man's Cell Phone, Eurydice, The Clean House, Passion Play and Orlando.
