VINTAGE PLAYBILL: Glengarry Glen Ross, 1984 and 2005
By Brynn Cox
The second revival of David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross opens at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre Dec. 8. The Playbill Vault looks back at the play's history on Broadway.
Glengarry made its world premiere in London in 1982 and later opened on Broadway March 25, 1984. The play won the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Drama but lost the Best Play Tony to Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing. Joe Mantegna won a Featured Actor Tony for his performance as Ricky Roma, a role he would play throughout the production's run.
Two decades later, Joe Mantello directed a Tony-winning revival that opened May 1, 2005. The production's all-star cast included Alan Alda, Jeffrey Tambor and Tom Wopat. Like Joe Mantegna, Liev Schreiber won a Featured Actor Tony for his performance as Ricky Roma.
