By Michael Gioia
Give Me Fever: The Many Voices of Peggy Lee, featuring the work of jazz singer, songwriter, composer and actress Peggy Lee, will be offered Feb. 23-25 as part of 92nd Street Y's Lyrics & Lyricists series.
Hosted by guest artistic director and co-writer Billy Stritch (Liza's at the Palace), Give Me Fever will feature vocalists Barbara Fasano (Harold Arlen's "Written in the Stars" CD collection), La Tanya Hall (national tour of Dreamgirls) and Gabrielle Stravelli (European tour of Hair).
MAC Award winner and cabaret legend Marilyn Maye, who frequently includes Lee classics in her shows, will be a special guest.
Give Me Fever, co-written by stage director Mark Waldrop, will be offered Feb. 23 at 8 PM, Feb. 24 at 2 PM and 7 PM, and Feb. 25 at 2 PM and 7:30 PM.
"I've been intrigued with Peggy Lee since first seeing her on TV shows like 'Carol Burnett,' 'Merv Griffin' and 'Johnny Carson' in the early 70s," said host Stritch in a statement. "She had such an original look and singing style but it wasn't until a few years later that I became aware of her incredible work as a songwriter. So Peggy seems like a perfect subject for the Lyrics & Lyricists series and I'm excited to be presenting an evening of her compositions and hit songs with the help of some of the greatest singers I know!"
Lee, born Norma Deloris Egstrom in 1920, joined the Benny Goodman band at age 19. Her hit songs ran the gamut from "It's a Good Day" to "Is That All There Is?," for which she won a Grammy Award. She is also known for her album "Black Coffee" and signature song "Fever." As a lyricist, Lee wrote dozens of songs with jazz and pop legends such as Harold Arlen, Cy Coleman, Quincy Jones and Marian McPartland. She was a lyricist and performer for Disney's "Lady and the Tramp," writing (with composer Sonny Burke) the classics "He's a Tramp" and "The Siamese Cat Song." As an actress, she received an Academy Award nomination for "Pete Kelly's Blues."
