DC Helen Hayes Nominees Include Kathleen Turner, Paul Downs Colaizzo, Robert Cuccioli, Christopher Sieber
By Kenneth Jones
Nominations for the 29th Helen Hayes Awards, representing excellence in Washington, DC-area professional theatre, were announced Jan. 28. Nationally-known names and respected resident artists are among nominees for the awards focusing on the 2012 calendar season. Among the nominees are actors Brooks Ashmanskas, Kathleen Turner, Helen Carey, Natascia Diaz, Holly Twyford, Christopher Sieber, Robert Cuccioli; playwrights Paul Downs Colaizzo (for Really Really, now being seen Off-Broadway), Bryony Lavery and Cheryl L. West; directors Michael Kahn, Matthew Gardiner, Robert Falls, Ethan McSweeny, designers Todd Rosenthal, Lee Savage, Riccardo Hernandez, Frank Labovitz and more. The recipient of the 2013 John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company was announced: It will go to Dizzy Miss Lizzie's Roadside Revue, founded in 2009 and drawing on "theatre, rock 'n' roll and the traditions of American music and storytelling to bridge the gap between a night at the theatre and a night at a rock concert." This year saw 150 individual nominated artists, ensembles and productions in 26 categories. During the 2012 season (January 2012-December 2012) 54 of 84 resident theatres produced 201 productions that met Helen Hayes Awards eligibility requirements. Nearly a quarter of the eligible plays produced in 2012 — 49 of 201 productions — were world premieres. The awards are named for DC native Helen Hayes, the 20th century actress of Broadway and American stages. The 29th Helen Hayes Awards will be held on April 8 at the Warner Theatre and JW Marriott Hotel.
