Ben Rimalower's Patti Issues Sets Dates in Los Angeles, San Francisco and More
By Adam Hetrick
Ben Rimalower will bring his popular solo show Patti Issues, about his lifelong love of Patti LuPone and his own relationship with his gay father, to the West Coast for five performances in March.
The solo piece performed by writer-director Rimalower (Joy, The Fabulous Life of a Size Zero) debuted at New York City's Duplex Aug. 30, 2012. Aaron Mark directs. It recently extended its run into April.
Here's how it's billed: "When Ben Rimalower was eight years old, his father came out of the closet and embarked on a drug-fueled tear that left his family in tatters. Amid the chaos of his young life, Ben found comfort — like so many gay boys before him and after — in musical theatre, and specifically in the transportive voice of Broadway star Patti LuPone... With a mix of comic irreverence, stark candor and show-biz bravado, Patti Issues poignantly explores the challenges facing LGBT parents and children while shining unique light on gay men's time-old obsessions with divas."
Upcoming performances include Berkeley (March 26 at UC Berkeley), San Francisco (March 27 at the Marsh Mainstage), San Diego (March 28 at Martinis Above Fourth) and Los Angeles (March 29 and 30 at the Cavern Club Celebrity Theatre).
Rimalower earned a Bistro Award for Best Solo Play for Patti Issues. He has also directed Snoopy! starring Sutton Foster; Justin Sayre Is Alive And Well… Writing; Project Lohan; Sodom the Musical; and Night Of A Thousand Judys. He also conceived and directed Leslie Kritzer is Patti LuPone at Les Mouches.
