St. Louis Premiere of Next to Normal, With Kimi Short and Jeffrey M. Wright, Begins Feb. 28
By Michael Gioia
New Line Theatre, now in its 22nd season, presents the St. Louis premiere of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Next to Normal beginning Feb. 28, prior to an official opening March 1, at the Washington University South Campus Theatre in St. Louis, MO.
Scott Miller and Mike Dowdy direct the limited engagement, which continues through March 23.
The cast features Kimi Short and Jeffrey M. Wright, who recently starred in New Line's High Fidelity, as Diana and Dan, respectively, with Ryan Foizey as Gabe, Mary Beth Black as Natalie, Joseph McAnulty as Henry and Zachary Allen Farmer as Dr. Madden and Dr. Fine.
Here's how New Line bills Next to Normal, which features a Tony-winning score by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey: "From the composer of High Fidelity comes the most adult, most mature rock musical to hit Broadway in decades, an unrelentingly intense, brutally honest – and often, darkly funny – story about a bipolar woman and the family that grapples with her illness, all set to a hard driving rock and roll score that explodes with raw, searing emotion. This is an emotional powerhouse of a musical about a family trying to take care of themselves and each other in the midst of one woman's fierce battle with bipolar disorder."
Other members of the creative team include costume designer Amy Kelly, lighting designer Sean Savoie, scenic designer Scott L. Schoonover and musical director Justin Smolik.
New Line Theatre, created in 1991, is dedicated to "involving the people of the St. Louis region in the exploration and creation of daring, provocative, socially and politically relevant works of musical theatre."
The Washington University South Campus Theatre is located at 6501 Clayton Road (just east of Big Bend) in St. Louis, MO. For more information and tickets, call (314) 534-1111 or visit NewLineTheatre.com.
