Idina Menzel Will Star in New Broadway Musical By Next to Normal Writers Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey
By Adam Hetrick
If/Then, a new musical by the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal writing team of Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, will arrive on Broadway in spring 2014 with Tony-winning Wicked star Idina Menzel.
David Stone, who also produced Wicked and Next to Normal, is shepherding the project about a woman on the cusp of 40, who moves to New York City to start fresh. It marks Menzel's first return to Broadway since her Tony-winning run in the 2003 musical Wicked.
Next to Normal and Rent director Michael Greif will helm the production that will first premiere in an out-of-town engagement at Washington, DC's National Theatre Nov. 5. It officially opens Nov. 24.
If/Then will subsequently begin Broadway previews March 4, 2014, towards a March 27, 2014, opening night at a Nederlander theatre to-be-announced.
Here's how it's billed: "On the verge of turning 40, Elizabeth moves to New York City, the ultimate city of possibility, intent on a fresh start – new home, new friends, and hopes for a resurgent career. But even in her carefully planned new life, the smallest decision or most random occurrence will impact her world in ways she never dreamt possible. Set against the ever-shifting landscape of modern day Manhattan, If/Then is a romantic and original new musical about how choice and chance collide and how we learn to love the fallout."
The New York Times reports that fans will have the chance to hear Menzel perform two songs from If/Then during Kitt and Yorkey's American Songbook Series concert March 1 at the Allen Room.
"I've experienced the beauty of working on original musicals and was eager to find a project where the material was exciting and new and spoke to my heart. I'm thrilled to have finally found it - an original musical with a complex, flawed, and surprising central character that I cannot wait to bring to life onstage," Menzel said in a statement. "I have loved collaborating with Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey on the creation of this character. And it is such a blessing to be reunited with Michael Greif, who launched my career with Rent, and David Stone, who took such good care of me with Wicked. I am extremely excited about If/Then and very much look forward to returning home to Broadway."
Next to Normal has book and lyrics by Yorkey and a score by Kitt. It earned 11 2009 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and took honors for Best Score, Best Orchestrations and Best Actress (Alice Ripley). Next to Normal was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
