Kennedy Center Season to Include Side Show Plus Patti LuPone, Mandy Patinkin, Patina Miller and More
By Andrew Gans
The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has announced its 2013–14 theatrical season, which will include a new production of Henry Krieger and Bill Russell's Side Show, featuring direction by Academy Award winner Bill Condon. The Center will also present national touring productions of Disney's The Lion King, Peter and the Starcatcher, Elf, Sister Act, Flashdance – the Musical and a return of Million Dollar Quartet. Tony winners Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin will bring their acclaimed Broadway concert, An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin, to the famed venue, and the seventh season of Barbara Cook’s Spotlight will feature cabaret-style performances by Lucie Arnaz, Brian d’Arcy James, Megan Hilty, Patina Miller and Tommy Tune. Side Show, a co-production with La Jolla Playhouse, will run June 14, 2014-July 13, 2014 in the Eisenhower Theater. Based on the true story of conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton who became stars during the Depression, the musical, according to press notes, is a "moving portrait of two women joined at the hip whose extraordinary bondage brings them fame but denies them love." Calendar highlights follow:
