Douglas Sills, Paul Anthony Stewart and Christina Bennett Lind Will Ride the Tiger at Long Wharf
By Adam Hetrick
Tony Award nominee Douglas Sills, Paul Anthony Stewart and Christina Bennett Lind will star in the Long Wharf Theatre world-premiere production of William Mastrosimone's new political drama Ride the Tiger.
Long Wharf artistic director Gordon Edelstein will stage the production that begins previews March 27 for a run through April 21. Ride the Tiger will officially open April 3. Mastrosimone is also the playwright of Extremities, The Woolgatherer and Sunshine.
Sills (The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Addams Family) will portray presidential candidate Jack, with Stewart ("Guiding Light," The People in the Picture) as crooner Frank and Lind ("All My Children") as Judy. The cast also features John Cunningham (Cabaret, Zorba) and Jordan Lage (Race, Speed-the-Plow).
According to playwright Mastrosimone, Ride the Tiger is based on an interview the playwright conducted with late singer Frank Sinatra during research for the miniseries "Sinatra."
"At one point in our history, the president of the United States was having an affair with a woman who was having an affair with the head of the Chicago Mafia," Mastrosimone said in a statement. "Any playwright who heard that idea would say that they are writing that play."
Here's how it's billed: "What happens when Jack, a charismatic young senator from Massachusetts, a Chicago mob boss, and Frank, a crooning movie star, all get involved with the same woman? A presidency. During the 1960 presidential campaign Jack becomes smitten with Judy, a ravishing young woman with connections. As Judy goes back and forth between these powerful men, political intrigue mounts as forces move behind the scenes to claim the highest office in the land."
The production team includes Eugene Lee (set design), Jess Goldstein (costume design), Tyler Micoleau (lighting design), Ryan Rumery (sound design) and Sven Ortel (projections design).
