New Comedy Honky Extends World-Premiere Off-Broadway Engagement
By Andrew Gans
The Urban Stages world premiere of Greg Kalleres' comedy Honky, which officially opened March 14, has extended its Off-Broadway run.
Directed by Luke Harlan, the production was originally scheduled to conclude April 7. Performances will now continue an extra week through April 14.
The cast comprises Scott Barrow, Philip Callen, Dave Droxler, Danielle Faitelson, Anthony Gaskins, Chris Myers, Reynaldo Piniella and Arie Bianca Thompson.
"When violence breaks out in an African American community over a pair of 'Sky Max' shoes, sales triple among white teens," according to press notes. "Meanwhile, a new pill guarantees to cure racism, advertising that 'if you think you don't need it – you're probably a racist.'" The play is further described as "a black comedy, in which five people, white and black, navigate the murky waters of race, rhetoric and basketball shoes."
The production also features sets by Roman Tatarowicz, lights by Miriam Nilofa Crowe, sound by Brandon Walcott and projection design by Caite Hevner.
Urban Stages is located at 259 West 30th Street. Tickets are $40 ($25 during previews) and are available at Smarttix.com or by calling (212) 868-4444.
