By Mark Shenton
On Friday, March 22, the day after its official opening night, the West End production of The Book of Mormon set a record for the biggest single day of sales in West End and Broadway history.
With booking newly extended to Jan. 11, 2014, and an additional 150,000 tickets put on sale, £2,107,972 ($3,210,019) was taken in ticket sales at the Prince of Wales Theatre. A new regular top price ticket high was established of £72.50 (excluding a compulsory £1 restoration fee) for bookings from July 1, while premium prices were hiked to £125 with immediate effect (from £95 pre-opening). These are the highest of any show in the West End.
In a press statement, Cameron Mackintosh, owner of the Prince of Wales Theatre, commented, "After a phenomenal opening night I am delighted to see a phenomenal record-breaking post opening box office of over £2 m. The Mormons have truly delivered a Heavenly hit!"
On Broadway, The Book of Mormon has broken the Eugene O’Neill Theatre’s house record 44 times; while the U.S. national tour also regularly breaks house records across America.
