"Another Brilliant Zinger": Elaine Stritch Bids New York Farewell With Movin' Over and Out at the Carlyle, Starting April 2
By Adam Hetrick
Tony Award-winning actress Elaine Stritch, a celebrated icon of the stage and New York City itself, performs her final engagement at the Café Carlyle beginning April 2. The octogenarian is retiring from performing to exit to her home state of Michigan.
Elaine Stritch at the Carlyle: Movin' Over and Out, running April 2-6, marks New Yorkers' final chance to see Stritch perform in Manhattan. The 88-year-old actress, perhaps best-known for playing Joanne in Stephen Sondheim's musical Company, is retiring from performing and will be moving to Michigan. She is a Detroit native.
Billed as a "a freeform evening of story and song," Stritch is joined by her longtime musical director Rob Bowman at the piano. All shows begin at 8:45 PM.
Stritch has played four extended and sold-out engagements at the Carlyle in recent years. A documentary, "Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me," which captures part of her New York adieu, will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this spring. Click here to read about the film.
"It's a little frightening for people to get into your life that much, but I don't have anything to hide," Stritch told Playbill.com in an earlier interview about the film project. "So, I'm open. There's no point in doing a documentary unless you absolutely deliver the 100 percent truth. Energy-wise it's very hard work."
When Stritch made her Town Hall debut in fall of 2011, a host of Broadway leading ladies shared their own words about the remarkable performer. Click here to read Playbill.com's feature "Leading Ladies of Broadway Propose a Toast to Elaine Stritch."
Elaine Stritch received Tony and Emmy Awards for Elaine Stritch at Liberty, which traces a stellar career, which includes roles in composer-lyricist Sondheim's Company plus The Little Foxes, Bus Stop, A Delicate Balance, Sail Away and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
There is a $125 music charge for all performances. The Café Carlyle is located within The Carlyle Hotel (35 East 76th Street at Madison Avenue). For reservations call (212) 744-1600. For more information visit TheCarlyle.
