Broadway Revival of Betrayal, With Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Rafe Spall, Sets Fall Broadway Dates at Barrymore
By Adam Hetrick
The Broadway revival of Harold Pinter's time-bending, three-person drama Betrayal, starring Daniel Craig, Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz and Olivier nominee Rafe Spall, will begin performances Oct. 1 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Tony Award-winning producer Scott Rudin (The Book of Mormon, The Testament of Mary, Death of a Salesman) is bringing the new staging to Broadway under the direction of Tony and Academy Award-winning director Mike Nichols (Death of a Salesman, Spamalot, The Real Thing). It will officially open Nov. 3 for a limited, 14-week engagement through Jan. 5, 2014. An on-sale ticket date has not been announced. As previously reported, real-life couple Weisz and Craig will portray on-stage married couple Emma and Robert, respectively. Spall will portray Jerry, Robert's best friend. According to producers, "Emma (Weisz) is married to Robert (Craig), a publisher, but she has long had an affair with Jerry (Spall), a literary agent and Robert's best friend; as, in a brilliant device, time is regained, so the full complexity of their relationships comes to light." Betrayal will have scenic design by Ian MacNeil, costume design by Ann Roth, lighting design by Brian MacDevitt and sound design by Scott Lehrer. Craig ("Skyfall," "GoldenEye," "Casino Royale," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") last appeared on Broadway in A Steady Rain. Betrayal marks Weisz's Broadway debut. Her films include "Oz the Great and Powerful," "The Bourne Legacy," "The Constant Gardener" and "The Shape of Things." Spall recently appeared in "Prometheus" and "Life of Pi." He received an Olivier nomination for Constellations. Pinter's 1978 drama travels in reverse dramatic order as it explores a hidden love affair. It premiered on Broadway in 1979 with Blythe Danner, Raul Julia and Roy Schneider. A 2000 revival featured Juliette Binoche, Liev Schreiber and John Slattery. |
