Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Spacey presented veteran stage and film actor Christopher Plummer with the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's Monte Cristo Award April 15 in New York City.
Marc Bruni directed the evening that featured musical tributes, readings and clips from Plummer's lengthy career on stage. His colleagues also offered tributes during the 6:30 PM event at the Edison Ballroom. O'Neill executive director Preston Whiteway and chairman Tom Viertel hosted the evening.
Spacey (Richard III, "American Beauty") was honored with the Monte Cristo Award in 2009.
A two-time Tony Award winner for Cyrano and Barrymore, and beloved for the film of "The Sound of Music," Plummer is being honored for "his monumental achievements and contributions to the American and international theatre community."
Plummer is an Academy Award winner for "Beginners." He also portrayed James Tyrone from Long Day's Journey Into Night for a PBS American Masters documentary of Eugene O'Neill.
"We are truly honored to present Christopher Plummer with the Monte Cristo Award. Mr. Plummer's unmistakable footprint upon stage and screen defines the Monte Cristo Award – artistic excellence and a lifelong commitment to theatre. His fondness for Eugene O'Neill's work and impact on the American stage is profound. I look forward to an incredible night in April," said O'Neill executive director Preston Whiteway in a statement.
