Reading of Admirable Bashville, with Howard McGillin, Annie Golden, Jeremy Bobb, Presented April 29
By Andrew Gans
The Project Shaw series continues April 29 with a reading of George Bernard Shaw's Admirable Bashville.
The reading at the Players Club in Manhattan features Jeremy Bobb as the athletic Cashel Byron; Howard McGillin as the Admirable Bashville; Heidi Armbruster as the wealthy and winsome Lydia Carew; Sean Dugan as London's man about town, Lucian; Jim Brochu as the rough and ready trainer, Mellish; Arnie Burton as London's most understanding Policeman; Warren Kelley as the ever-vague Lord Worthington; Charlotte Moore as the infamous and glamorous actress, Adelaide Gisborne; Ian Gould as London’s most infamous boxer, Paradise; Kevin Rennard as the bold African Chief out for a good time, Cetewayo; and Annie Golden as The Mystical Narrator. Journalist Rob Weinert-Kendt of American Theatre Magazine is the guest host for the evening.
Show time is 7 PM.
David Staller, the acclaimed singer-actor who has produced and directed all of the Project Shaw offerings, handles those same duties for this reading.
The comedy, according to press notes, is based upon Shaw's own 1886 novel "Cashel Byron's Profession," which follows "a world champion prizefighter (Bobb) who tries to woo wealthy aristocrat Lydia Carew (Armbruster) without revealing his illegal profession (or the truth about his theatrical mater). Meanwhile, she also has a secret admirer in her formidable footman: the handsome, smart, efficient and ever-watchful Bashville (McGillin)." Shaw wrote the play as a parody of Shakespeare, and it is written entirely in blank verse.
Project Shaw events for 2013 also include the following: Mrs. Warren's Profession (May 20); Too True To Be Good (June 24); On the Rocks (July 22); Shaw with Ibsen's League of Youth (Sept. 16); Shaw with Wilde's short stories (Oct. 21); Shaw with Chekhov's short stories (Nov. 18); and Super Shaw (Dec. 16).
Past participants include Blair Brown, Mark Kudisch, Kerry Butler, Tyne Daly, Jonathan Hadary, Daniel Jenkins, Rebecca Luker, Michael Cerveris, Karen Ziemba, Michele Pawk, Bruce Vilanch, Jack Gilpin and George S. Irving.
