Dogfight's Derek Klena Will Make Broadway Debut in Wicked

Derek Klena will assume the role of Fiyero in the Broadway production of Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's Wicked beginning May 28 at the Gershwin Theatre.



Kyle Dean Massey, who is currently playing that role, will play his final performance May 26. Willemijn Verkiak, who is currently playing the role of Elphaba, will also give her final performance May 26.

Klena, who will be making his Broadway debut, previously worked with both Wicked's newest Elphaba, Lindsay Mendez (Mendez also begins May 28), and director Joe Mantello in the Off-Broadway world-premiere musical Dogfight.

Klena will join a cast that includes the aforementioned Mendez as Elphaba, Katie Rose Clarke as Glinda, Randy Danson as Madame Morrible, Adam Grupper as The Wizard, Catherine Charlebois as Nessarose, F. Michael Haynie as Boq and John Schiappa as Dr. Dillamond.

Klena was also recently seen in Carrie at MCC.

Adapted from the novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked delves into the back story of the iconic characters from Oz. The hit musical has a score by Stephen Schwartz, a book by Winnie Holzman, direction by Joe Mantello and musical staging by Wayne Cilento.

The production also features scenic design by Eugene Lee, costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Kenneth Posner, sound design by Tony Meola, projections by Elaine J. McCarthy, wig and hair design by Tom Watson, music supervision and arrangements by Stephen Oremus, orchestrations by William David Brohn and dance arrangements by James Lynn Abbott.

Wicked won Tony Awards for Costume Design, Scenic Design and Best Actress in a Musical (Idina Menzel). It was nominated as Best Musical.
