Sherie Rene Scott's Solo Show, Piece of Meat, Will Return to 54 Below
By Michael Gioia
Three-time Tony Award nominee Sherie Rene Scott, last seen on Broadway in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, will bring her cabaret show, Piece of Meat, back to the intimate Manhattan nightspot 54 Below in June.
The show had its New York premiere at 54 Below in October 2012 and was seen in London in February. Scott will return to 54 Below for two weeks from June 17-29.
Piece of Meat, which features music direction by Todd Almond (Melancholy Play, We Always Have Lived In The Castle, On The Levee, Girlfriend), staging by Michele Lynch and direction by Lear Debessonett, includes songs by Dire Straits, Joni Mitchell, Paul McCartney, Pete Townshend, Annie Lennox and Buddy Holly.
In Piece of Meat, Scott explores her personal struggle through song. "After over 26 years of the happy, healthy vegetarian [lifestyle] — never having been tempted — I suddenly found myself faced with the overwhelming desire for meat," she previously told Playbill.com. "This was obviously something I wanted to keep very private, and I was having a big internal struggle with, and so I wrote about it. And, as Todd and I worked together, just wanting to put a show together of songs that we loved and enjoyed playing, Todd noticed how much the songs reflected [my struggle]…
"This show is basically about all the investigating I did over this one piece of meat and how I felt like I had been a piece of meat at certain parts of my life. I identified with the meat. I identified with the animal and the prey, and I had compassion for that. To find myself on the other side, it was mind-blowing."
Piece of Meat will be offered June 17 and 24 at 7 PM; June 19 and 26 at 7 PM; June 20 and 27 at 7 PM; June 21 and 28 at 8 PM; and June 22 and 29 at 8 PM. There will be additional 11 PM late shows June 28 and June 29.
Scott was Tony-nominated for her performances in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Everyday Rapture and also received a nomination for the Best Book of Rapture. Her other Broadway credits include The Little Mermaid, Aida, Rent, Grease and The Who's Tommy.
There is a $50 cover charge in the main dining room and a $40 cover at the bar. All seats have a $25 food and beverage minimum. Visit 54Below.com.
