Academy Award Nominee Leslie Caron to Star in Laguna's Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks
By Adam Hetrick
Academy Award-nominated film icon Leslie Caron will star in the Laguna Playhouse production of Richard Alfieri's poignant comedy Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks.
Michael Arabian will helm the production that begins Nov. 26 towards a Dec. 7 opening night. Performances are scheduled through Dec. 29.
Caron will play Lily Harrison. Casting for the role of Michael Minetti has not been announced.
Celebrated actress and dancer Caron is best known for her appearances in such films as "An American in Paris," "Lili," "Daddy Long Legs, "Gigi" and "Fanny." Her stage appearances include Grand Hotel, Can-Can and a 2010 Paris production of A Little Night Music in Paris, in which she played Madame Armfeldt.
Here's how the play is billed: "A touching and human comedy about a formidable retired woman, Lily Harrison, who hires an acerbic dance instructor, Michael Minetti, to give her private dance lessons—one per week for six weeks—in her gulf-front condo in St. Petersburg Beach, Florida. What begins as an mercurial relationship blossoms into an intimate friendship as these two people from very different backgrounds reveal their secrets, fears, and joys while dancing the Swing, Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha-Cha, and Contemporary Dance. Michael and Lily learn to overcome their outward differences and discover an unlikely but profound connection. By the final lesson, Lily shares with Michael her most closely guarded secret and he shares with her his greatest gifts, his loyalty and compassion."
Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks played a brief, 56-performance Broadway run in fall 2003. The New York cast featured stage and screen veteran Polly Bergen and Mark Hamill of "Star Wars" fame.
The play is currently being adapted into a film featuring Cheyenne Jackson and Gena Rowlands.
