A Minister's Wife to Make West Coast Premiere at San Jose Rep
By Carey Purcell
A Minister's Wife, based on George Bernard Shaw's play Candida, will make its West Coast premiere at the San Jose Rep. The production will run June 20-July 14.
Directed by Michael Halberstam, who also directed the world premiere of A Minister's Wife, the cast features Sharon Rietkerk as Candida, Christopher Vettel as the Reverend James Morrell, Tim Homsley as Eugene Marchbanks, Liz Baltes as Miss Proserpine "Prossy" Garnett and Jarrod Zimmerman as the Reverend Alexander "Lexy" Mill.
"The story immediately whisks us away to well-mannered Victorian London at the turn of the 19th century, where charismatic Reverend James Morell is eager to spread his Christian and Socialist beliefs to his admiring flock," press notes state. "Morell believes his family life is solid and that he's happily married to the vivacious and strong-willed Candida. But when she returns home from the country with a young poet who wants to rescue her from what he presumes to be a rather dull life, a love triangle explodes."
A Minister's Wife features a script by Austin Pendleton, score by Joshua Schmidt (Adding Machine) and lyrics by Jan Levy Tranen.
The creative team includes Dolores Duran-Cefalu (music direction), Collette Pollard (scenic design), Brandin Barón (costume design), David Lee Cuthbert (lighting design) and Steve Schoenbeck (sound design). Rick Lombardo is the artistic director, and Nick Nichols is the managing director.
