Michael Gambon and Peter Egan to Star in Beckett's Eh Joe and First Love at Edinburgh International Festival
By Mark Shenton
Michael Gambon and Peter Egan will perform Samuel Beckett's Eh Joe and First Love, respectively, at Edinburgh's Royal Lyceum Theatre, running Aug 28-31, as part of this year's Edinburgh International Festival.
They are being presented in productions from Dublin's Gate Theatre as part of Beckett at the Festival, a season of theatre performances and film showings focusing on the work of Samuel Beckett.
Eh Joe, which will be performed nightly at 9 PM, is directed by Atom Egoyan and features the voice of Penelope Wilton. Beckett's first play written specifically for television, it explores how one man is forced to face up to his past and the lovers he has abused and driven to destruction. Tormented by inner demons, he is made to relive everything he has tried to forget. Amplifying every emotion and thought, Joe's face is projected on a large screen as Gambon portrays the man haunted by his past brought to life through Wilton’s voice. Gambon has previously starred in Beckett's All That Fall and Krapp's Last Tape on stage.
First Love, which will be performed at 7 PM, is directed by the Gaet's artistic director, Michael Colgan. This stage version of Beckett's 1946 novella tells a comic yet dark story that explores a struggle between desire and emotional engagement of a man who finds himself homeless, sharing a canal-side spot with a prostitute. Egan was last seen on the London stage in Alan Bennett's People at the National Theatre.
