Lin-Manuel Miranda to Present the Broadway League's First Family Nights Initiative With Large Donation
By Carey Purcell
Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda will present The Broadway League's First Family Nights initiative with a check for $92,000 from proceeds collected from the "In the Heights: In Concert" benefit event.
In addition, a $25,000 check will be presented to The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance's executive director Sandra Garcia-Betancou.
The presentation will be made at the closing ceremony and party celebrating the 10th anniversary of Northern Manhattan's annual month-long arts festival, the Uptown Arts Stroll.
Miranda is the actor/composer-lyricist and creator of the Tony Award-winning musical In The Heights, and his feature film "200 Cartas" premiered during the Uptown Arts Stroll. He also contribued music and lyrics to Bring It On: The Musical and translations to the revival of West Side Story.
Earlier this year, Miranda held a benefit concert at the United Palace for Cultural Arts, "In The Heights: In Concert." The performance was presented by Viva Broadway, an initiative of the Broadway League that aims to promote Broadway theatre within the Latino Community. A surplus of ticket sales proceeds went towards The Broadway League's Family First Nights initiative — a nationwide program designed to encourage economically disadvantaged families to attend theatre and local arts programs.
The Broadway League has partnered with ACDP and Amber Charter School to identify families in Northern Manhattan/Washington Heights/Inwood for the Family First Nights program. These families will receive tickets to three Broadway shows next season and a talkback session with featured cast members from the shows.
Family First Nights is a nationwide program designed to encourage economically at-risk families to attend theatre on a regular basis. Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) is a non-profit arts service organization launched in 2007 with the support of the Hispanic Federation and the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone that aims to cultivate, support and promote the works of artists and arts organizations in Northern Manhattan.
