By Andrew Gans
Complete casting has been announced for the Broadway revival of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which will begin previews Aug. 24 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre; the box office at the Rodgers opens for business July 22.
The production, which will officially open Sept. 19, will feature international film star Orlando Bloom and two-time Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad as the titular star-crossed lovers. Five-time Tony Award nominee David Leveaux directs.
The cast will also include Tony Award winner Brent Carver as Friar Laurence, two-time Tony Award nominee Jayne Houdyshell as the Nurse, Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper as Lord Capulet, Christian Camargo as Mercutio, Roslyn Ruff as Lady Capulet, Conrad Kemp as Benvolio, Justin Guarini as Paris, Corey Hawkins as Tybalt and Geoffrey Owens as Prince Escalus. Completing the company are Donte Bonner, Joe Carroll, Don Guillory, Sheria Irving, Maurice Jones, Eric Loscheider, Spencer Plachy, Michael Rudko, Tracy Sallows, Thomas Schall, Carolyn Michelle Smith and Nance Williamson.
The creative team includes scenic designer Jesse Poleshuck, costume designer Fabio Toblini, lighting designer David Weiner, sound designer David Van Tieghem and hair designer David Brian Brown.
This production will mark the first time in 36 years that the play will be produced for Broadway. This version of the classic tale, according to press notes, "will retain Shakespeare’s original language but have a modern setting in which members of the Montague family will be white, and the Capulet family will be black."
The opening of the box office marks the launch of the production’s Student Ticket Program; 100 tickets per performance will be set aside at $20 for students and educators. Instead of a lottery or rush program, which require waiting in line, these tickets will be available for purchase in advance at the box office with valid ID. Students can be verified in advance to order tickets online, exclusively through TIX4STUDENTS.COM. Limit of two tickets per order; price does not include facility fee.
Tickets are available now at The Richard Rodgers Theatre Box Office (226 West 46th Street) or at Ticketmaster.com or by calling (800) 745-3000 for performances through Nov. 24.
