By Michael Gioia
Sarah Sokolovic, Katie Thompson and Libby Winters star in Imaginary Friends, the short play by Jeffrey James Keyes that is produced by Chris Eleftheriades at the 38th Annual Samuel French Inc. Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival, July 24 at the Clurman Theatre.
Directed by Terry Berliner (Off-Broadway's Hereafter) and featuring Sokolovic (Detroit), Thompson (Giant) and Winters (American Idiot), the 6:30 PM performance is part of a week-long festival that continues through July 27.
Out of 30 plays, six finalists will be chosen by the Samuel French, Inc. editorial staff to receive publication and licensing contracts. The winning plays will be presented in a special performance July 28.
Chosen from over 900 submissions, Imaginary Friends, according to press notes, "is a short play in which Sasca (Sokolovic), Leslie (Thompson) and Alice (Winters) have an intimate discussion about the hauntings of their childhood."
Playwright Keyes is also the author of The End of Days, which was performed at the Soho Playhouse as part of the New York International Fringe Festival.
The Off Off Broadway Festival started in 1975, and hundreds of theatre companies and schools have participated in the Festival's first 36 years. Since its inception, over 200 plays from the Festival have been published, and many of the participants have become established, award-winning playwrights including Theresa Rebeck, Shirley Lauro, Bekah Brunstetter, Steve Yockey, David Johnston and Sheila Callaghan.
The Clurman Theatre is located at 410 West 42nd Street. For tickets, call (800) 432-7250 or visit Telecharge.com. For more information on the Samuel French Off Off Broadway Festival, visit OOB.SamuelFrench.com.
