Broadway's Forever Tango to Welcome Grammy Winner Luis Fonsi
By Carey Purcell
Grammy Award winner Luis Fonsi will join the cast of Broadway's Forever Tango next month.
The singer, who has been honored with the Latin Grammy, Latin Billboard, Premios Lo Nuestro and the ASCAP Voice of Music Award, will perform Aug. 20-Sept. 1.
"Performing on Broadway is an honor and a challenge for any artist. I am excited to be able to join such an important show that celebrates our music and culture, in this case a genre so elegant and sentimental as the Tango. I love and respect theatre so I am truly honored to have the opportunity to take my voice to the Broadway stage," Fonsi said in a statement.
The production, which includes 16 tango dancers, one vocalist and an 11-piece orchestra, currently features vocalist Gilberto Santa Rosa, who will perform through July 28, and Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy, from "Dancing With the Stars," who will perform through Aug. 11.
As previoulsy reported, Forever Tango will also feature Grammy Award winner Luis Enrique July 30-Aug. 18.
Forever Tango originally opened on Broadway in 1997, receiving numerous Drama Desk and Tony Award nominations. It returned to Broadway for a four-month engagement in 2004.
"Forever Tango is music, drama, culture, a way of life," press notes state. "The popularity of tango has exploded all over the world. Sensuous and sophisticated, the tango is a feeling that you dance. A story is channeled through the flick of the leg, the tug of a hand, the tap of a foot, and the arch of an eyebrow. It’s passionate, yet melancholic. Tender, yet violent. You dance it with somebody, but it is so internal, you dance it by yourself."
Forever Tango began performances July 9 at the Water Kerr Theatre. It will conclude its 10-week engagement Sept. 15, with a final guest star to be announced shortly.
