The creative team has been announced for the Broadway premiere of A Night With Janis Joplin, starring Mary Bridget Davies as the late rocker. Previews begin Sept. 20 at the Lyceum Theatre.
Written and directed by Randy Johnson, the production arrives in New York following acclaimed engagements at Portland Center Stage, Cleveland Play House, Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, Pasadena Playhouse and Milwaukee Repertory Theater. Opening night is scheduled for Oct. 10.
The creative team will include choreographer Patricia Wilcox (Motown), set and lighting designer Justin Townsend (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), costume designer Amy Clark (Chaplin), sound designer Carl Casella (Relatively Speaking), projection designer Darrel Maloney (American Idiot), music director Ross Seligman and original music director and arranger Len Rhodes (Mike Tysons The Undisputed Truth in Las Vegas).
Additional casting for the ensemble cast will be announced in the coming weeks.
Davies, who received the 2013 Cleveland Critics Circle Award for Best Actress in a Musical and was nominated for a 2013 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Resident Musical, will reprise her role as the late Joplin on Broadway.
"Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin (Mary Bridget Davies) exploded onto the music scene in 1967 for three incredible years, reigning as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll," according to press notes. "The unmistakable voice filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. A Night With Janis Joplin is a musical journey celebrating the inspirations of one of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s greatest legends."
A Night With Janis Joplin is produced by Todd Gershwin and Daniel Chilewich, in association with The Estate of Janis Joplin and Jeffrey Jampol for JAM, Inc.
